College of Ashes

College of Ashes

3rd-level College of Ashes feature

Bards of the College of Ashes are chroniclers of loss, decay, and endings. They sing dirges for the fallen world, compose elegies for dead civilizations, and find terrible beauty in ruin. Their music is haunting and melancholic, capable of bringing strong warriors to tears or draining the will to fight from their enemies. In the ash-choked cities of the Veil, these bards are both mourned and celebrated.

Bonus Proficiencies

When you join the College of Ashes at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Survival skill if you don't already have it. Additionally, you learn to speak, read, and write one dead language (work with your DM to determine which).

Dirge of Decay

At 3rd level, you can channel entropy through your music. When you use your Bardic Inspiration, you can choose to use a dirge instead. The creature gains the Bardic Inspiration die as normal, but can also use the following special options:

  • Withering Note: When the creature hits with an attack, it can expend the Bardic Inspiration die to deal additional necrotic damage equal to the number rolled.
  • Ashes to Ashes: When the creature is hit by an attack, it can use its reaction to expend the Bardic Inspiration die. The attacker takes necrotic damage equal to the number rolled, and the creature gains temporary hit points equal to half that amount (rounded down).

Lament of Loss

At 6th level, your songs of mourning can break your enemies' spirits. As an action, you can expend one use of Bardic Inspiration and choose a number of creatures within 60 feet of you that can hear you equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one creature). Each target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or have disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks until the end of your next turn.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Ash Walker

At 6th level, you've become attuned to the desolation of the Ashen Veil. You ignore difficult terrain caused by ash, rubble, or environmental decay. Additionally, you have advantage on saving throws against environmental hazards (toxic gas, extreme temperatures, etc.).

Requiem for the Fallen

At 14th level, you can perform a powerful song that blends mourning with destruction. As an action, you can expend a spell slot of 3rd level or higher and perform a 1-minute requiem. Choose a number of creatures up to your Charisma modifier within 60 feet who can hear you. For the duration, those creatures:

  • Have disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
  • Take 2d6 psychic damage at the start of each of their turns.
  • Have their movement speed reduced by 10 feet.

A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If you maintain concentration for the full minute, the spell slot you expended is not consumed.
